Magic
Exposition - 400 Years of Illusion
The Martin Pacheco Magic Collection
Just
a few weeks ago, on June 8, 2007 a very special event took place:
The largest magic collection in Latin America is being exhibited
for two months at the National Museum of Decorative Arts of Buenos
Aires, Argentina.
The
collection we are refering to is the Martin Pacheco Collection.
This collection is comprised of more than 3500 pieces that include
posters, books, engravings, theatre bills, props, toys, etc., which
span nearly 400 years of magic history.
Notable
pieces of the collection include a first edition of Scot's Discoverie
of Witchcraft from 1584, as well as a first edition of the
first magic book in the Spanish language published in 1733 authored
by Minguet and Yrol titled "Engaños a Ojos Vista y Diversión
de Trabajos Mundanos Fundada en Lícitos Juegos de Manos"
(Deceptions for the Eyes and Mundane Diversions Based on Legitimate
Sleight of Hand).
This
collection also includes the largest grouping of Fu Manchu memorabilia
in the world. It includes costumes, playbills, an extensive collection
of old manuscripts from the Bamberg family dynasty of magicians,
and posters from the performer.
Oh
yes, and talking about posters...This collection is enormous! Martin
has amassed an impressive collection that includes rare Cherets,
Kellars, Fu Manchu's, and most importantly, of every single magician
from Latin America and Spain. He has unique Chang paper, as well
as lithographs of Richiardi Jr., Prof. Alba, and others.
This
book is the catalog that describes and documents the hundreds of
items that are currently in exhibition. If you are a serious collector
or magic posters you should have this book. It is a wonderful historical
reference, as well as a record of the best items in the collection
and of course it is a memento of this very special event.
The
book is beautifully designed, with very high production standards,
and it is written in both English and Spanish.
It
is softbound with 114 full colored pages.
